What is an Archdeaconry?
There are 3 Archdeaconries covering the whole Diocese of Rochester - Bromley & Bexley, Rochester and Tonbridge. Each Archdeaconry contains a number of Deaneries and is overseen by an Archdeacon.
An Archdeacon serves under the Bishop in looking after a large part of the Diocese. He/she is a source of advice, guidance and support to the bishops, clergy, churchwardens and the people of the parishes. He/she admits churchwardens into office each year at the annual Visitation and ensures that parishes look after their church buildings.
He/she helps with the appointment of parish clergy and in their Ministry Review. He/she sits on the key committees of the Diocese. He/she does not usually have his/her own parish, but will travel around the very many parishes of their Archdeaconry.
